Last Efforts against Re-Opening of Foreign-Language Schools

We are Against Opening Foreign-Language Schools initiating groups is spending last efforts to prevent the adoption of a Government-backed draft that will allow re-opening of foreign-language schools in Armenia.

The group is holding a rally in front of the sessions’ hall at the Government Building where the draft is expected to be voted on, according to a release issued by the group, Tert.am reported.

The group finds it very important that all the citizens concerned about this issue participate in this assembly.

This recent initiative proposed by the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenia has roused a lot of concern and caused a deep divide in the Armenian society.

Proponents say that the re-opening of foreign-language schools will be a good chance for future offsprings to get a high-quality education at home, while opponents counter it amid fears that they will deepen the gap between different layers of society and will put the Armenian indentity at threat.

Remind that these bills envisage opening of a total of 15 foreign-language schools in Armenia. The Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan assured the Armenian-related subjects will be taught in Armenian. The bills have been widely protested through protest actions, as well as in the social networks.

Badeyan said, the bills have been discussed at the Republican party council sitting on June 7 and it was agreed unilaterally to approve them.

Note that Prosperous Armenia coalition party pledged to be against the bill. They vowed to vote for the bill providing amendments are made to it, according to which, foreign-language education will be carried out in high school, Panorama.am reported.

“Heritage” and ARF Dashnaktsutyun are also against the bill.
